Spastic cerebral palsy

  • Spastic cerebral palsy is the most common type that affects 70 to 80 percent of all cases. It causes spastic and jerky movements of the person affected. The cause is linked to the part of the brain that controls movement which is the motor cortex. The cortex is what controls muscle movement.

Athetoid cerebral palsy

  • Athetoid cerebral palsy is a non-spastic form. It is also known by the name dyskinetic cerebral palsy. People with this type of palsy will experience involuntary muscle movement in the face, limbs, and torso. It can also affect the way one eats and can cause stiffness within the body.

Ataxic cerebral palsy

  • Ataxic cerebral palsy is a condition that affects balance and coordination. It only accounts for a small percentage of all the cases. It is caused by damage to the cerebellum part of the brain. Patients will often have tremors and muscle tone reduction issues. Some people will have issues of depth perception and other challenges from this type of palsy.

Mixed cerebral palsy

  • Mixed cerebral palsy is a mix of all the other conditions listed above. Less than 10 percent of patients will have this type of condition. The damage to the brain that causes this kind of palsy is found in multiple locations. Also, the patient can exhibit varying degrees of issues.

Cerebral palsy affects a lot of people in different ways. Kids that are uneducated on the conditions of each palsy have a hard time understanding why the person moves the way they do. Sometimes those misunderstandings can turn into problems at school as kids pick on the other child.
