The ovaries are two female reproductive glands that produce the eggs on either side of the uterus. However, ovarian cancer occurs when uncontrolled/abnormal growth in the cells in the ovaries occurs.

The term “ovarian cancer” contains various types of cancers all of which originate from ovarian cells. Usually, epithelium or lining cells, of the ovary, arise. However, these include epithelial ovary (from the cells on the ovary surface), fallopian tubes and primary peritoneal cancer. These are all considered as one disease process as well.

There is also an entity called the ovarian low malignant potential tumor. Also, these tumors have some microscopic features of cancer but tend to not spread as common cancers.
