The Dilemma of Youths in Nigeria By Miss Iwoland, Akande Bukky
One topical issue which has dominated (and which is still dominating) discussions over the radio, on television, pages of newspapers, formal and informal talks, lectures and seminars is the dilemma of the Nigerian Youths.
Many people have expressed their views and complain about this all-important issue. It appears that no single other issues in the history of this country have so much publicity as this. I also want to seize this opportunity to express my views on this issue.
No doubt! Nigeria, our country is no more smiling.
One could begin with the causes of the dilemma of youths as a cankerworm that is eating deeply our dear nation. Our youths who are supposed to be a flag bearer or vanguard of change are all patriotic in reverse with their kleptomaniac’s fingers. The truth is an average Nigerian youth is not comfortable with the situation of our country ranging from the economic recession, unemployment etc.
However, it is pertinent to know the root of all our plight. Ignorance is the root cause of all the challenges we are facing; being ignorant makes us practice POLITICAL APATHY. Whereby someone that doesn’t worth it (such as mediocre) will be elected as a senator, a governor, a president…….. This has led to the bad government we are having recently which has led also many youths to agony.
Illiteracy also have its own contributions in these difficulties of ours. One being illiterate may make him exposed not to his rights as an individual thus, generates ignorance. (even if he know his rights, fights for it, get elected to any post he wants, he will definitely fight for his selfish interesting while destroying Nigeria’s economy). However, if care is not taken to the high level of illiteracy, Nigeria as a nation will collapse soon.
We have indeed relied so much on our government, and it has worsened the economy of Nigeria. Youths are to choose either to be successful and stay alive. That is, by not fighting the government that have dejected their rights. It is so saddening that our youths have turned to an instrument used by the politicians. Politicians whose sons and daughters have fled to abroad to distort elections, some have turned to hoodlums, cultism, thugs etc.
It is better for our youths to wake up from their slumber and stop being political thugs for any politician.
However, I suggest that youths should rise and fight for their rights. Also, they should not be based on education only but acquire skills and pay close attention to agriculture so that we can empower ourselves without relying on government again.

Remembrance (R. I. P Mr BORA) : Don’t Major in Minor And Never Minor in Major
This is being published on 11th April, 2016 at exactly 9:19 P. MThis topic might seem strange or somehow to some readers but I can tell you vividly, this quote is the best ever piece of advice I have gotten and I can also give to anybody.
Firstly, let me use this medium to give respect and regard to the origin of this quote. This piece of advice is the first ever beneficial advice I had from a lecturer, teacher, adviser, Pathfinder, helper, father and a mentor in person of Late Dr. W. O. Akande, popularly known as ‘BORA’ from Department of Management of Accounting, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria. May his perfect soul rest in perfect peace, forgive his shortcomings. I pray that may Almighty God grant him Aljanat (Paradise).
It is really a great loss and Dr. Akande popularly called ‘BORA’ will always be remembered for his good deeds, interpersonal relationship, selfless attitude, and the lives he had touched positively. The name BORA is simply defined as ‘B’ or ‘A’, the late Doctor BORA who is a mathematician and also a Data Analyst will tell you as a fresh student in the citadel of learning that, no matter the course(s) make sure you either score B or A that is where the names originated from BorA. That’s the first lesson you will learn from this great scholar.
However, going straight to one of the pieces of advice from Dr. BORA is the topic ‘Don’t minor in major and never major in minor’. From all the lessons and pieces of advice, I have learned from the late data analyst. I take this quote as the priority because of its weight, importance, and relevance in my life so far.
What is the real meaning of this quote? In life, there is no doubt about it that not all things we do have the same importance. The importance or relevance to the course to achieve your target varies. In economics, it is called scale of preference, that is, ranking your needs in order of importance. The lesson from this is that the late doctor will say never minor in major and don’t major in the minor. Let me use a scenario to explain it so that you can understand it better so that you can benefit from it.
In the tertiary institution, you offer many courses which are from your field of your study while some are not. Those which are not are those called borrow course from other department or special electives. These borrow courses or special electives have less significant on your cumulative grade point. Some students will now perform excellently at those courses which are less significant at the expense of their core and major courses where they perform woefully. The doctor will say never give importance to the lesser course and never give lesser concern to the major courses. This quote has been the bedrock foundation of many students in the Department of Management and Accounting, OAU, Ile-Ife. With this piece of advice, you will rank your courses in order of importance and study harder to score your expected grades.
Furthermore, this quote is not only useful or important in the academic environment. Also, to the human life to achieve any set goal or target. Spend less time on what will neither benefit you nor add value to the course of your life to achieve your objective and attain success. In other hands, never underrate or degrade the important aspect or activity that will contribute immensely in order to achieve your objectives and goals. With this quote, it will serve as checkpoint whenever you are doing something. You will be asking yourself does this thing will add value or contribute to the course I want to achieve?
I hope you have learned from this great quote, therefore, I tell you now, never minor in major and don’t major in the minor.
Kindly share this post to benefit others with this great piece of advice.
CHILDREN DAY: The Nigerian Child, Hope For Tomorrow
CHILDREN DAY: THE NIGERIAN CHILD, HOPE FOR TOMORROW. 5 Basics Things You Must Give Your Child.According to Oxford Advanced Learners’ Dictionary, it defines a child as a ” young human being who is not yet an adult. ” In addition, the Convention on the Right of the Child (CRC) adopted by the United National General Assembly on 20th November 1989 and also adopted by the African Union in July 1990 defines a child as ” one who is below the age of eighteen years. ”
As a result of the global recognition given to children the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) held a convention on 20th November 1989 and made Welfare and Right of the children topmost on their agenda.
At the end of the convention, it was unanimously agreed that:
The above provisions have been signed and ratifies by Nigeria Government since 1991 during the reign of Retired General Babangida. According to former Governor Godwill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State; he said ” he would be futile to make he gains we have made in terms of development and progress without preparing the next generation for sustaining our legacy.
The Nigerian Child, hope for tomorrow as my topic to wish all children a happy day is to create awareness for Nigerian youth on the importance of Nigerian youth. The popular oxymoron saying goes thus ” the child is the father of man” illustrates the importance of the child. It is without doubt that every body has one time or the other passed through childhood. It was as a result of proper care by parents that made individual useful adults of the community today.
However, a child is gift from God. A gift given to any parent as joy. For this reason, the gift should not be maltreated or wasted. A child should be given basic things to help him or her something in the society. It is sadden that many parents nowadays forget those children given to them are special, but don’t even care anymore as they go their ways their children also go other ways. Children are precious, gold, diamond, special, unique and are the future and promising leaders of our society.
Thereof, many children have been denied the privilege and rights they deserved from parent, society and government. Parent as the primary teacher should take their children as priority. Plan for them, laid the foundation to become something in future for them. Relying on government has failed, therefore parent should sit tight not misuse the Golden opportunity or gift given to them.
The following are basic and necessary things parents should train and teach their children on in order to build a solid foundation to live a satisfactory life.
I believe religion is the basis of everything. Train your child the religion you practice right from his or her early age. Also, train them with the ‘do and don’t’ of Almighty God. Train and teach your child the fear of God. I believe as you also believe that practice makes things to be perfect. Teach your children to refrain from sin. Train your child to be prayerful and also believe in prayer to God as solutions to any problem or difficulty. Religion is the background of everything.
Education as a process of teaching, training and especially in schools to improve your child knowledge and develop skills is very germane. Give your child sound and quality education. Take education as a top priority for your child. Never deprive your child the right to get equip with skills and knowledge. Education should not only be formal but also informal. No knowledge is a waste, spend any dime on your child to get the best education.
Train your child how to behave especially towards other people. Some children are good while some are bad, I think the Genesis of behaviour of any child is from their parent. Behavioral attitude is sometimes heredity. Children tend to inherent behaviour from his or her parents. They learn second by second from whatever Mum or Dad does. Wisdom and moral are the products from behaviour.
– HEALTHY LIFESTYLE
A healthy lifestyle is the best life to live as a human being. Train your child to be neat, clean and all these in the interest of hygiene. Health is wealth they say but also health is life. Let your child understands the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. Train him to keep off dirt or filthy things that can cause damages to his or her life.
– SOCIETAL LIVING
One of the major pieces of training or teachings any parent must give his or her child is the societal living. That is, how to live in the society. How to relate with other people be it from the same tribe or other tribes. Train your child to be tolerance, endurance and painstaking. Also, train your child to see other people in the society as their brothers and sisters. Train your child no to harm or dislike anybody because we are all one. Train your child to love everyone around him or her. In addition, train your child to share whatsoever hole or she has with other people. Train your child to respect other people. Train your child to be content and satisfactory with any situation he or she finds himself or herself in the society.
Finally, it is obvious that we cannot talk of any community or society without taking care of the child. Any parent or government that does not put the interest of the children first or put them in his Programme or guest would surely fail because the coming generation which is the children would sustain the existing legacy.
I believe the basic 5 things listed above are very important to give every child given to any parent as a gift. A child with religion, education, good behaviour, healthy lifestyle and positive social living have a bright future as indirectly the society has a brighter society too.
HAPPY CHILDREN DAY TO ALL
